Fridays off in 2027
2027 starts and ends on a Friday, so it has 53 Fridays. Group A is off on January 1 and every 14 days after it, through December 31: 27 Fridays. Group B is off on the Fridays between, from January 8 to December 24: 26. Each group works the other's Fridays off, 8 hours.

Pay periods and hours
Federal law counts a 9/80 schedule as a compressed schedule, which for a full-time employee is an 80-hour biweekly basic work requirement scheduled for less than 10 workdays (5 U.S.C. 6121(5)). The table uses two-week periods from Sunday to Saturday, starting Sunday, January 3, 2027, so January 1 and 2 belong to the last period of 2026. Every period holds eight 9-hour days and one 8-hour Friday for each group, 80 hours with paid holidays counted. A holiday taken on a Thursday is listed with the group that takes it. Your employer's pay periods may start on another day; the 2027 biweekly payroll calendar lists paydays for any schedule.

The workweek that keeps every week at 40 hours
Counted from Sunday to Saturday, a 9/80 schedule alternates 44-hour and 36-hour weeks: four 9-hour days and the 8-hour Friday in one week, four 9-hour days in the next. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act each workweek stands on its own, so the 44-hour week owes a nonexempt employee 4 hours of overtime even though the two weeks add up to 80 (29 CFR 778.104).
The workweek can start somewhere else. It is a fixed and regularly recurring period of 168 hours, and it "may begin on any day and at any hour of the day" (29 CFR 778.105). Start it halfway through the 8-hour Friday and 4 of that Friday's hours fall in each workweek, so both weeks come to 40.
Group A works Monday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and its working Fridays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with an unpaid lunch hour at noon every day. The workweek starts on Friday at 12:00 PM.
- Week from Fri, Feb 26, noon
- Friday off: 0
- Mar 1 to Mar 4
- 4 × 9 = 36
- Fri, Mar 5, morning
- 8:00 AM to noon = 4
- First workweek
- 0 + 36 + 4 = 40
- Week from Fri, Mar 5, noon
- 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM = 4
- Mar 8 to Mar 11
- 4 × 9 = 36
- Fri, Mar 12
- Friday off: 0
- Second workweek
- 4 + 36 + 0 = 40
- Sunday to Saturday instead
- Feb 28 to Mar 6 = 44; Mar 7 to Mar 13 = 36
Group B's weeks split the same way, a week later. Because the start of a workweek can change only when the change is meant to be permanent and not to evade overtime (29 CFR 778.105), it is set when the 9/80 schedule begins. Hours worked beyond the schedule are still counted in the week they fall in.
Federal agencies apply their own rules. For employees on a compressed schedule, overtime hours are officially ordered and approved hours of work in excess of the compressed schedule (OPM Handbook on Alternative Work Schedules).
Federal holidays on a 9/80 Friday
OPM lists four federal holidays observed on a Friday in 2027. Juneteenth, Christmas Day and New Year's Day 2028 fall on a Saturday, and a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before (5 U.S.C. 6103(b)). That includes New Year's Day 2028: January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, and OPM lists its observed date as Friday, December 31, 2027 (OPM federal holidays).
When a holiday falls on a nonworkday of an employee on a compressed schedule, the employee's preceding workday becomes the holiday, or the next workday when the nonworkday is a Sunday (OPM Handbook on Alternative Work Schedules; 5 U.S.C. 6103(b)). On a 9/80 schedule the group with that Friday off takes the Thursday before it, and the group working that Friday has it off with pay for its 8 scheduled hours. In 2027 that happens to group A 3 times and to group B once:
| Holiday | Observed | Friday off for | Working that Friday |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Fri, Jan 1 | A takes Thu, Dec 31, 2026 | B off Jan 1, 8 hours |
| Juneteenth (Sat, Jun 19) | Fri, Jun 18 | A takes Thu, Jun 17 | B off Jun 18, 8 hours |
| Christmas Day (Sat, Dec 25) | Fri, Dec 24 | B takes Thu, Dec 23 | A off Dec 24, 8 hours |
| New Year's Day 2028 (Sat, Jan 1, 2028) | Fri, Dec 31 | A takes Thu, Dec 30 | B off Dec 31, 8 hours |
The other eight holidays of 2027 are observed from Monday to Thursday, so both groups have them off as 9-hour days. An agency may set a different day for employees on a compressed schedule when the usual one would cause an adverse agency impact (5 U.S.C. 6103(d)), and the AWS day off itself does not move (OPM "in lieu of" holidays). Private employers choose their own holidays: the FLSA does not require pay for holidays not worked (U.S. Department of Labor).
Add your group's days off to your calendar
Each group's .ics file holds its 2027 Fridays off and the Thursdays it takes for holidays, as all-day events, for Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook: group A and group B. For 24-hour and 12-hour rotations, see the shift calendar. To add up a two-week card on this schedule, use the biweekly time card calculator, which counts overtime week by week.
Questions
How many Fridays off are there on a 9/80 schedule in 2027?
27 for group A, from January 1 to December 31, and 26 for group B, from January 8 to December 24. 2027 has 53 Fridays because it starts and ends on one.
Is Friday, December 31, 2027 a federal holiday?
Yes. January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, so OPM lists Friday, December 31, 2027 as the observed New Year's Day 2028. On this calendar it is group A's Friday off, so a federal employee in group A takes Thursday, December 30 instead, and group B has the Friday off.
What happens when a holiday falls on my 9/80 Friday off?
In federal agencies the holiday moves to your preceding workday, usually the Thursday, unless your agency sets another day to prevent an adverse agency impact. Private employers follow their own holiday policy.
Do I get overtime in the 44-hour week of a 9/80?
If you are a nonexempt employee, only when your employer counts the workweek from Sunday to Saturday or another day that puts the whole 8-hour Friday in one week. With the workweek starting halfway through that Friday, each week holds 40 scheduled hours and overtime starts after 40 (29 CFR 778.104 and 778.105).
